Océ answers paper dilemma with zero CO2 emissions

Carbon neutrally produced paper key to sustainability

Venlo, The Netherlands, 15 April 2010 ─ Océ, an international leader in digital printing and document management, today announced that it has extended its portfolio of sustainable paper with a carbon neutrally produced paper. The Océ Black Label Zero is produced in an integrated mill where part of the energy needed for the paper production comes from the mill’s own pulp-making process. Other fuels used in the process are biofuels, leading to a paper profile of zero CO2 emissions.

Sustainable paper sourced by Océ rises to 70%

The percentage of sustainable paper sourced worldwide amounted to 70%. This is one of the keynote messages enshrined in the Océ Sustainability Report 2009, published today. Other highlights are the increase in the amount of reused parts and modules in products developed by Océ as well as the reduction of landfill.

Sustainable paper

Océ Black Label Zero comes from an FSC® certified source; the paper is produced from wood coming from sustainably-managed forests. Océ Black Label Zero is also certified with the EU Ecolabel and the Nordic Swan. These certifications guarantee maximum sustainability throughout the production chain and include strict criteria for emissions to air and water use, energy consumption, use of chemicals and waste management. Furthermore, Océ Black Label Zero is bleached in the most environmentally-friendly manner, totally chlorine-free (TCF). The paper is available in 75 and 80g/m2 A4 and A3.

Reuse means less energy and waste

The use of materials for products that Océ developed in-house amounted to 4.5 kilotons, 22% of which consisted of reused materials. Océ exceeded its target set in 2008 for the reuse of materials. Océ also refurbished approximately 12,000 service parts (150 tons). The increase in reuse is a result of optimising Océ’s remanufacturing activities. The Océ Prémia Class programme was enhanced with new models fully remanufactured from end-of-life products to give them a new lifecycle and reduce waste. Waste processing optimisation enabled a reduction in the total amount of waste landfilled from Océ production sites to 2.2% in 2009, down from 3.6% in 2008.
